Well it’s that time once again with new officers in place to remind the membership about the Council on Practices and Standards (CoPS). ASSE now has 14 Practice Specialties. (The CoPS Board voted to make the Fire Protection Branch the 14th Practice Specialty during their meeting and at the 2008 PDC. There are now 5 Branches associated with practice specialties. Research is being conducted into adding two (2) new branches, Utilities and Security.
ASSE’s Council on Practices and Standards will be providing the membership with a CoPS Technical Article of the Month. In an email dated July 25, 2008 CoPS provided members with the following article: “An Inside Look at the Z359 Fall Protection Code Through Capital Safety”. If you would like to reprint this article in your Chapter Newsletter, please notify Rennie Heath at rheath@asse.org and credit the Council on Practices and Standards (CoPS). If you are a Practice Specialty member, please consider writing a Technical Article for your Practice specialty; it may get picked for the CoPS Article of the Month.
If you would like more information on CoPS opportunities, services, and benefits of Practice Specialty membership please refer readers to the ASSE Practice Specialties website.

The Society's financial health is essential to its ability to provide service to members, support the profession and achieve the goals and objectives of the Strategic Plan. To achieve our vision as a champion of the SH&E professional, a global leader of the profession and a premier resource to all, we need additional resources to expand and improve existing services, as well as to develop new ideas and deliver innovative solutions to our members and the profession. Our focus is to strengthen the Society by enhancing the professionalism of the members and improving their effectiveness and importance to their organizations.
Financial resources for the Society are derived from dues and non-dues revenue as well as investment performance. The Board of Directors approves the Society budget annually. In recent years we have experienced growth in non-dues revenue; with dues revenue staying relatively flat. Examination of the current year and looking forward, the Finance Committee believes that a dues increase is necessary to achieve the goals noted above. The following rationale and recommendation are provided on behalf of the Finance Committee.
