Foundations of Public Health for Safety Professionals

Course will be held from 1:00pm to 5:00pm, registration begins at 12:30pm. ASSE/AIHA Vendors Expo will be held from 3:30pm to 7:30pm.

Thursday, September 16, 2010 - 1:00pm to 5:00pm - Brady's Landing Restaurant

Presented by Dr. Robert Emery & Bruce Brown of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston

Course Schedule:

Many safety professionals seem to be unaware that they are actually members of the nation’s larger “public health” workforce. “Public Health” is defined as the science and art of protecting and improving the health of communities through education, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and research for disease and injury preventiona. So while safety professionals are actually public health practitioners, many have not received formalized training in the public health sciences, which is unfortunate because these concepts serve as the foundation for the profession. This shortcoming is not unique to the safety profession as a recent study revealed that approximately 80% of the nation’s public health workforce had not been academically trained in public health. This seminar is intended to provide safety professionals with an introduction to the science and art of public health, with a particular focus on three of the five core discipline areas: biostatistics, epidemiology, and health promotion & behavioral sciences. Ample time will be allocated for questions and discussion, and attendees will be provided with a set of supplemental reference links on public health, along with information about local public health certificate and graduate school educational opportunities.

The course costs $50 if paid prior to September 15, 2010. Walk-in registrants are welcome, however the course fee is $60 on the day of the event. Unemployed HSE professionals or full-time students, please ask about the 50% discount. Refunds will be processed if the request is made at least 72 hours prior to the start of the course. Application for 0.312 BCSP COC points. Conversion to 0.5 ABIH points.

Join us from 3:30 to 7:00pm for Vendors' Night! We'll provide light appetizers while you visit the booths, see the services and new equipment displays, meet new people, reunite with friends or just hang out with us.

Council on Practices and Standards Update

By: Lawrence Schulze Asst. Region III VP-CoPS

Well it’s that time once again with new officers in place to remind the membership about the Council on Practices and Standards (CoPS). ASSE now has 14 Practice Specialties. (The CoPS Board voted to make the Fire Protection Branch the 14th Practice Specialty during their meeting and at the 2008 PDC. There are now 5 Branches associated with practice specialties. Research is being conducted into adding two (2) new branches, Utilities and Security.

ASSE’s Council on Practices and Standards will be providing the membership with a CoPS Technical Article of the Month. In an email dated July 25, 2008 CoPS provided members with the following article: “An Inside Look at the Z359 Fall Protection Code Through Capital Safety”. If you would like to reprint this article in your Chapter Newsletter, please notify Rennie Heath at rheath@asse.org and credit the Council on Practices and Standards (CoPS). If you are a Practice Specialty member, please consider writing a Technical Article for your Practice specialty; it may get picked for the CoPS Article of the Month.

If you would like more information on CoPS opportunities, services, and benefits of Practice Specialty membership please refer readers to the ASSE Practice Specialties website.

Just as a note and for your interest, the Practice Specialty / Branch Abbreviations, Names and Technical Publication Names are:

ASSE Dues Increase White Paper

The Society's financial health is essential to its ability to provide service to members, support the profession and achieve the goals and objectives of the Strategic Plan. To achieve our vision as a champion of the SH&E professional, a global leader of the profession and a premier resource to all, we need additional resources to expand and improve existing services, as well as to develop new ideas and deliver innovative solutions to our members and the profession. Our focus is to strengthen the Society by enhancing the professionalism of the members and improving their effectiveness and importance to their organizations.

Financial resources for the Society are derived from dues and non-dues revenue as well as investment performance. The Board of Directors approves the Society budget annually. In recent years we have experienced growth in non-dues revenue; with dues revenue staying relatively flat. Examination of the current year and looking forward, the Finance Committee believes that a dues increase is necessary to achieve the goals noted above. The following rationale and recommendation are provided on behalf of the Finance Committee.
